RED APE TRAIL

Duration: 5 days / 4 nights


Day 1; Kuching – Nanga Sumpa (L/D)

0750-0810 hours pick up from hotel in Kuching and drive to Batang Ai reservoir. Along the way stop at Lachau Bazaar. Stroll around the shops and the small native market and have an early lunch in a local coffee shop. Then continue your journey, arriving at Batang Ai Lake around 1330-1400 hours.Board a longboat and travel upriver to Nanga Sumpa, arriving at approx. 1530 hours, although the exact time will depend on river conditions. Settle in at Borneo Adventure’s lodge and have dinner. After dinner visit Nanga Sumpa longhouse. Relax on the ruai (common verandah) and spend time with the Iban people. Interact with the community; learn about their culture and enjoy some local rice wine. Overnight at Nanga Sumpa lodge.


Day 2; Nanga Sumpa – Mawang Camp (B/L/D)

0800 hours – breakfast in Nanga Sumpa Lodge. Approx. 0900 hours, depart Nanga Sumpa and trek for 2-3 hours to Mawang Camp. The camp is located at an elevation of 195 metres. While the orangutans are only occasionally seen, their nests can usually be observed. Upon arrival, settle in and have lunch at Mawang Camp. After lunch go trekking on one of the trails to search for orangutans and their nests. Return to camp and have dinner. Overnight at Mawang Camp.


Day 3; Sungai Mawang (B/L/D)

After breakfast, leave Mawang and go on 3-4 hour trek, searching for orangutans, orangutan nests and other wildlife along the way. Return to camp and have lunch. Relax or if you wish help the guides gather jungle produce like bamboo shoots or edible ferns for your dinner. Late afternoon take a walk in the vicinity of the camp to search for orangutans. Return to camp before dusk. Dinner and overnight at Mawang jungle camp.


Day 4; Mawang Camp – Nanga Sumpa (B/L/D)

Trek from Sungai Mawang to Nanga Sumpa (about 2-3 hours). Search for wild orangutans and other wildlife before arriving at Nanga Sumpa on the Delok River. Settle in at Borneo Adventure’s lodge and have lunch. Afternoon go on a circular trek in the Nanga Sumpa area through primary and secondary forest that is known orangutan habitat. Overnight at Nanga Sumpa Lodge.


Day 5; Nanga Sumpa – Kuching (B/L)

Breakfast in the lodge. 0900 hours travel downriver to the Batang Ai Lake jetty, arriving around 1030-1100 hours. Then travel overland back to Kuching with lunch enroute. Arrive in Kuching approx. 1630 hours and be dropped off at your hotel.


Note: Leeches are found in the forest along the Red Ape Trail. Insect repellent is effective against leeches. This tour requires a reasonable level of fitness. For more details on the fitness level required to complete this trek please contact us. Weather conditions and the water level of local rivers may force our guides to modify the tour in the interests of safety. For example, some trekking activities are not possible during heavy rain or a thunderstorm. No refunds will be offered if a trek is cancelled or boat transfer delayed due to bad weather or river conditions.
